A professional LED strip installation looks clean, functions reliably, and lasts for years. Whether you’re lighting a kitchen, a retail space, or an outdoor facade, following proper installation practices makes all the difference.
Step 1: Plan Your Layout
Before touching any materials, map out your installation:
- Measure the total length needed
- Identify where power injection points will be (every 5-10 meters for 12V, every 10-15 meters for 24V)
- Plan the power supply location — keep it accessible for maintenance
- Mark cut points on your layout diagram
Step 2: Prepare the Surface
Clean the mounting surface thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol. The 3M adhesive backing on LED strips bonds best to clean, dry, smooth surfaces.
For textured or painted surfaces, consider using aluminum channels (profiles). They provide a clean mounting surface, improve heat dissipation, and create a professional diffused light effect.
Step 3: Cut at the Right Points
LED strips can only be cut at designated cut marks, usually indicated by copper pads and a scissor icon. Cutting anywhere else will damage that section of the strip.
Use sharp scissors or a precision cutter for a clean cut. Avoid bending the strip at the cut point.
Step 4: Connect and Wire
- Use the appropriate connector type for your application (see our connector guide)
- Keep wire runs as short as possible to minimize voltage drop
- Use proper gauge wire — 18 AWG for runs under 5 meters, 16 AWG for longer runs
- Label your wires (+ and -) to avoid polarity mistakes
Step 5: Mount the Strip
Peel the adhesive backing gradually as you mount — don’t remove it all at once. Press firmly along the strip after placement. For long runs, add additional mounting clips every 30-50cm for extra security.
Step 6: Test Before Finalizing
Power on the system before concealing any wiring. Check for:
- Uniform brightness along the entire run
- No flickering or dead sections
- Correct color output (for RGB strips)
- All connections are secure
Pro Tips
- Voltage drop: If the far end of your strip is dimmer, add a power injection point midway.
- Heat management: High-density strips (over 14.4W/m) benefit from aluminum channels for heat dissipation.
- Corner turns: Use corner connectors rather than bending the strip sharply — bending can damage the circuit traces.
- Outdoor installations: Always seal cut ends and connections with silicone sealant.
